The Naadi is an astrological science which is followed and practiced by lots of Naadi reader based on the palm leaf scripts (Olaichuvadi in Tamil) which are written by sages. There are several branches in Astrology viz Horoscopy. i.e., casting and reading horoscopes based on the Positions of planets at the time of birth of a person and the movements of the Planets across the Zodiac. This is a well developed science as evidenced from ancient manuscripts like Brihatsamhita, JathakaPaarijatha etc. Naadi astrology is written by “Sapta Rishis” – Agathiyar, Vashitar, Kaushikar, Sukar, Birugu, Bogar and Athiri. Sage Agaithyar has written in Tamil. Other sages translated tamil texts into Sanskrit. Sage AGATHIYAR is the prime sage of all sages.
In Tamil Nadu, the texts are mainly written in vattezhuthu, which was an abugida script used to write Tamil up until the 12th century CE. These Naadi leaves were initially stored on the premises of Thanjavur's Saraswathi Mahal Library in Tamil Nadu. The British colonialists later showed interest in the Naadi leaves concerned with herbs and medicine, future prediction, etc. Some leaves got destroyed, and the remaining were auctioned during the (rule). These Nadi leaves were obtained by the astrologers who are belonging to the Valluvar Community and have been practiced down the years from one generation to the other. So that the community has been well developed in astrology over the years.
